June 27 – Amarillo

AQHA has presented International Horsemanship Camps every summer since 2000. The camps are sponsored by the international affiliates and conducted by teams from universities within the United States. This year, nine colleges applied for grant money from AQHA for the opportunity to travel and share their knowledge of horsemanship and the American Quarter Horse industry.

I had the opportunity to travel to Sweden, Norway and Denmark in 2005 with three other girls from North Central Texas College, Gainesvile, Texas, and teach the horsemanship camps. Still, to this day, if you ask any of us what is one of the most memorable moments from college, the camps are definitely on the top of the list. Not only did we have the opportunity to travel to foreign countries and instruct basic horsemanship camps, but we also made contacts within the industry that we couldn’t have made otherwise.

Anne Morrison, from Colorado State University, was the international intern in 2005. She did an amazing job of representing AQHA, answering questions, scheduling the camps and so much more. This year, I am excited to take on the position as the international intern and represent AQHA during these horsemanship camps.

The journey began back in January with correspondence among 12 different camp hosts from 10 European countries as well as the four colleges, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, University of Findlay, Sam Houston State University and Texas Tech University, who received the grants. Through many e-mails and phone calls, the schedule was posted in late February.

Thanks to the help of Elaine Cox, AQHA corporate travel manager, the tickets are booked and the group from UWRF is headed for Norway. After a head-spinning week in Amarillo attempting to learn everything there is to know about AQHA, I will also be departing for Norway on Friday, June 27. The 12 camps are crammed into six weeks.
